IT'S OFFICIAL! RISE MAGAZINE IS BACK FOR THE 2ND EDITION!

The Emerging Leaders Committee launched RISE in May 2022. This an annual magazine is dedicated to showcasing and educating Emerging Leaders, students, and other public health professionals. The magazine is a mix a academic articles, storytelling opportunities, and artwork created by CPHA members.

We invite submissions from emerging public health professionals and students representing diverse settings (universities, community-based organizations, nonprofits, governmental entities, health settings, etc). All submissions are expected to align with the mission and vision of CPHA and address current, public health-related issues. 

RISE understands that there is a diverse number of talents across emerging leaders in public health. In order to showcase this, we invite you to submit articles, drawings, interviews, paintings, photography, comic strips, crossword puzzles, and more! All submissions are welcome, but please note that the opportunities we have high demand are for:

      1. Cover page artwork
      2. Research articles
      3. Opinion pieces
      4. Photography

SUBMISSION INFORMATION

It is important that authors and artists comply with the submission guidelines below to be reviewed. Each individual is allowed to submit up to 3 pieces that they have contributed to as a collaborator.

  • Submission Types

RISE currently accepts the following type of submissions:

    • Research Articles. Preferred length is 2,000 words max (excluding References, Figures, and Tables). 
    • Review Articles and Narratives. Preferred length is 500-2,000 words.
    • Commentaries. Preferred length of these submissions is 500-2,000 words.
    • Artistic Articles including, but not limited to, essays, poems, policy memos, interviews, etc. These pieces typically are no more than 1,000 words.
    • Images and Other Media. Image files should be at least 300 DPI, submitted as JPEG, PNG, EPS, or SVG files. 
    • Photographs. Image files should be at least 300 DPI, submitted as JPEG, TIFF, or PNG. CPHA requires written permission or a signed waiver forms for all images depicting individuals, except in the case of crowd scenes or when persons are not identifiable.
  • Reference Requirements
References are required and must be submitted in alignment to the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Guide. CPHA does not support plagiarism, and integrity is taken very seriously. Authors are highly encouraged to utilize free, automated citations tools such as ZoteroMendeley,or Citation Machine. CPHA will not accept submissions with superscripts. 

 

  • Submission Agreements

 When you submit an article or piece of artwork, you agree to the following:

    • CPHA owns the copyrights to the article or artwork after it is published.
    • If your work gets published, the piece may be used in teaching and may be available to share on web sites or institutional repository. You may, additionally, reuse the content in subsequent articles or reprinting as a whole as a chapter in a book.
    • CPHA may change the piece or add minor edits to your submission. A final version will be sent back to you for approval before the publication.
    • You are not guaranteed publication.
    • You confirm that the submission is NOT under consideration by another publication and/or has not previously been published elsewhere.
    • If you are not the sole creator of a submission, you will let the Emerging Leaders Committee know that there are additional contributors who also consent to these submission guidelines.
    • If you are selected for publication, you may need to provide a headshot and short bio. 
    • You are a current student, or you have graduated from any education level within the last five years.
    • You are a CPHA member in good standing. If you are unsure of your membership status, please email [email protected] 
    • Please do not include any company or associated logos unless relevant to the topic of the piece.  
    • You are able to provide a headshot and 3 sentence biography for each collaborator on the submission piece by March 15th. 
  • Deadlines
    • All submissions are due on February 15th, 11:59 PM MST
    • No late submissions will be accepted.

EDITOR APPLICATIONS

In addition to submitting articles and artwork, we invite you to apply as a RISE Editor. This volunteer opportunity allows you to gain exposure and experience while empowering other emerging leaders. There are no minimum requirements for an editor other than CPHA membership, but a background in writing and/or design is preferred. Some of the expectations for an editor are, but not limited to:

    • Assistance in designing RISE's layout, style, and tone
    • Review written content for spelling and grammar errors
    • Fact-checking information in articles
    • Providing suggestions for edits when needed
    • Assisting in selecting submission finalists
    • Ensure that the selected submissions create thoughtful discussion of public health issues
    • Support health equity advancements through RISE
