Egregious instances of police violence, subsequent mass protests, and organized advocacy efforts have resulted in declarations of racism as a public health issue from the APHA, its affiliates, and state and local public health agencies across the nation. Moreover, we have seen growing attention to the over-utilization of the criminal legal system as the primary entity addressing concerns such as homelessness, mental illness, poverty, violence, substance use and addiction. These are public health matters which cannot be adequately understood or resolved through a public safety framework alone. Denver has been a national leader in efforts to more comprehensively and holistically solve these problems through community engagement, systems coordination, policy advocacy, and direct action. Join us at the 2021 APHA Day of Action to learn more about the amazing work underway to advance justice, equity, health, and safety in Denver communities. Together, we will virtually tour downtown Denver to observe and discuss these determinants and consequences of racism and public safety inequities in Denver, as well as hear from the community leaders and programs that are successfully working towards solutions. Denver partners whose work will be highlighted include: Sponsors: APHA’s Community Health Planning and Policy Development section, Colorado Public Health Association, and the Drexel Dornsife School of Public Health. Co-Sponsors: APHA's: Student Assembly, Community Health Workers Section, Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section, Public Health Social Work Section, Maternal and Child Health Section, Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section, Black Caucus of Health Workers, Latino Caucus for Public Health, Caucus on Homelessness, Caucus on Public Health and the Faith Community, Gun Violence Working Group, Education Board We welcome your co-sponsorship!
