Submit For The APHA Annual Conference: Affiliate Poster Session

The Council of Affiliates (CoA) is sponsoring an affiliate poster session and two student poster sessions for the upcoming APHA 2017 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Atlanta, GA (November 4-8, 2017). This year’s conference will explore the theme “Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate Changes Health”.

Affiliate Poster Proposal:

CoA is inviting Affiliates to submit abstracts for posters that demonstrate affiliate best practices or promising programs for exhibition at the annual meeting. While proposals on programs that impact policy or promote affiliate best practices are encouraged, posters can be on any topic related to any work of the Affiliate.

Undergraduate and Graduate Student Poster Contests

CoA is also sponsoring two student poster sessions of high-caliber abstracts for undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in public health-related coursework. Students are encouraged to submit proposals for public health-related work they have either recently completed or are in the process of completing for exhibition at the annual meeting.

The attached document includes text you can use to send an email out to students in your region.

The deadline for submitting poster abstracts for both the affiliate and student poster sessions is April 30, 2017. For more information and to submit an abstract, please visit the website.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Jennifer Dykhuizen, APHA Student Assembly Representative to CoA, at [email protected]. We look forward to reviewing you and your students’ abstracts!

Announcing: The 500 Cities Project Interactive Website

We are excited to announce the launch of the interactive website for the 500 Cities Project.  This public, interactive website allows users to retrieve, view, and explore uniformly-defined selected city and census tract-level data for the largest 500 US cities for conditions, behaviors, and risk factors that have a substantial impact on population health. The interactive mapping application also enables users to zoom in to their neighborhood and explore their local data in the larger context of their city.

The release of the interactive web application complements the early December release of the project map books and data. The project represents the first-of-its kind data analysis for the 500 largest American cities, and the census tracts within these cities, to identify, analyze, and report data for 27 chronic disease measures.

Until now, no data have been made available on a large scale for cities and small areas within

cities.  High quality small area estimation data from the 500 Cities Project will help inform the development and implementation of effective and targeted public health prevention activities, identification of emerging health problems, and establishment and monitoring of health

objectives in many of America's cities.
